Kirk Cousins May Not Return As Vikings QB Next Season, Reports Team Insider

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins’s contract is close to expiration and has expressed he hopes to re-sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

Following the end of the team’s season on Monday, the media asked if he would embrace a hometown discount if that’s ultimately what the Vikings seek. He responded by saying,

“That’s a great question and one I’ve thought about pretty much my whole 12 years. I do think it’s important to be aware of it. I think that God has blessed me financially beyond my wildest dreams. So at this stage in my career, the dollars are really not what it’s about.”

However, Minnesota Vikings play-by-play announcer Paul Allen has a different take on QB Cousin being resigned by the Vikings. He doesn’t affirm Cousins fits with the team’s current approach.

On Thursday morning, Vikings radio play-by-play announcer Allen discuss on his KFXN-FM 100.3 radio show. He asked former Vikings linebacker and current radio network sideline reporter, Ben Leber if he thinks the Vikings could move up into the top five to get their QB of choice.

Leber said,

“I don’t think so. I don’t think so, man. You could, but they’re going to hold you over the fire and say, OK well we want X, Y, and Z. And if it comes to existing player equity, we don’t really have it. So you can’t really trade players, so you’re trading future picks. You might be one quarterback away from making a little run in the playoffs, but I don’t think anybody believes that this roster, as it is right now, is a Super Bowl-contending team.”

Allen also highlighted “how hard” the Vikings front office, led by general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, can “preach analytics” if they bring Cousins back after a serious injury.

Allen said on the show,

“I just can’t imagine the analytics add up to a 36-year-old off an Achilles injury, at fat cash. I can’t possibly imagine that the analytics, that are of now, add up to something like that.”
